Five workplace scenarios

1. A pilot asks you to keep watching an aircraft that is becoming difficult to distinguish against the background. The client is waiting for one final pass. What do you say?Report the observation limit clearly and request a pause or repositioning before continuing.Continue watching and speak up if you lose the aircraft completely.Use the camera display as your primary reference until the final pass is complete.Ask the client whether the final pass is essential before interrupting the pilot.

2. You notice distant movement that may be a crewed aircraft but cannot yet identify its direction. What do you do?Wait until you can identify it confidently so you avoid a false alert.Tell another observer quietly and let them decide whether to alert the pilot.Communicate the possible traffic, location and uncertainty promptly, keep observing, and update the PIC as information improves.Tell the pilot that airspace is unsafe and direct an immediate landing without describing the observation.

3. At equipment return you find that a battery label no longer matches your checkout record. The team is ready to leave. What is the best response?Use the most likely battery number and reconcile the record tomorrow.Ask a teammate to sign the return because they handled the batteries last.Return all batteries together and report only if someone later finds one missing.Report the discrepancy, preserve the checkout record, and reconcile identification and condition before closing accountability.

4. A site manager asks you to relocate the boundary while the PIC is briefing another crew member. How do you handle the request?Move it a short distance to keep the customer relationship positive.Acknowledge the request, keep the existing boundary, and relay it to the PIC for a coordinated decision.Tell the manager that only the office can answer and stop communicating.Ask another VO to move the boundary while you keep observing.

5. During flight, smoke appears near charging equipment and a person approaches it. You are the assigned observer. What do you prioritize?Leave your observation position immediately to disconnect everything.Watch the aircraft until landing and report the smoke afterward.Alert the PIC and crew with the location, warn people away, and coordinate the briefed response while ensuring aircraft observation is covered.Ask the approaching person to unplug the charger while the crew finishes the flight.
